QCC Humidifiers:
Beating the Dry Winter Climate – No More Static Shocks from Touching the Thermostat

The most common misconception about forced air heating is that it drys the air in your home. Since this is untrue lets explore why the air in your home feels dry.

Humidifier Picture

There are three ways dry air enters your home: opening doors, leaking through walls/windows, and combustion air. When this dry, contracted air enters the home in the winter it has a low saturation point to begin with; not to mention that its relative humidity is low. Eventually this air will become heated along with the rest of the air in your home. When this occurs the air will expand and although the amount of water vapor will remain the same the saturation point will rise, thereby lowering the relative humidity and making the air FEEL dryer. So what are the saturation point and relative humidity? The saturation point is the maximum amount of water vapor air can hold at a given temperature. Relative humidity is the percentage of water vapor in the air relative to the saturation point, OR what percent of water vapor is in the air compared to how much water vapor the air can possibly hold at a given temperature.

The importance of humidification is often overlooked in homes. Lack of humidity can damage furniture/flooring, raise energy bills, affect our level of comfort, and worst of all be a risk to your health. Amazingly enough too much humidity can also be a bad thing. Most experts agree that 35%-45% relative humidity is optimal.

Lets look into specific examples of how too little or too much humidity can affect your lifestyle.

Too Little
(Winter 30% and Lower)

Too much
(Summer 50% and Up)

Furniture/
Flooring

Too little humidity can cause the separation and cracking of wood in your furniture and floors.

Too much humidity causes wood to swell, which is in exact opposition to what happens in the winter. The two together can quickly ruin a floor or a piece of furniture.

In winter dry air can draw moisture from our skin making us FEEL colder, and by default we turn to the thermostat

Our body depends on sweating in order to cool itself. When the air is saturated with humidity again we turn to the thermostat. This is where dehumidification and the proper sizing of air conditioners can play a crucial role.

Unhealthy

Dry air can greatly affect our ease of breathing. Especially for asthma/allergy sufferers.

In addition to creating contaminants like bacteria, mold, fungi, and mildew too much humidity and open doors in the summer give the open season go-ahead to the mass breeding of dust mites.

Quality Climate Control, Trane, and Aprilaire have the solution to these problems. Here at QCC we offer the sale and installation of many humidifiers, and dehumidifiers as well as thermostats and air conditioning systems that can control the dehumidification in the summer months. Take a look at the products below and choose the product that best suits your needs.
